I’m Perri, FOOD BLOGGER, ARTIST, & endometriosis warrior.
I’ve had a lot of health problems for most of my life. As a kid, I had stomachaches, muscle pain, chronic fatigue, and frequent ear infections. As I got older, I started to have extremely painful periods—I’m talking the kind where it feels like your insides are being wrung out, and you’re curled up in a little ball unable to move for several hours. Cue the massive amounts of Tylenol and constant attachment to my heating pad (sounds sustainable, right? Wrong).
I finally ended up in the emergency room with pain so bad it felt like a sword was stabbing me in the uterus (for those of you out there without uteruses reading this, we’re talking REALLY REALLY PAINFUL).
That day, after years of being told, “It’s all in your head” or “You don’t really look sick”, I finally got my answer: I have endometriosis. This is a disease where tissue similar to the lining of your uterus starts growing in other places (like on your ovaries, bowels, bladder, appendix, etc). It can result in extreme pain and in some cases infertility. During this process, I was also diagnosed with thyroid issues and other food sensitivities.
I was lucky enough to have excision surgery to remove the endometriosis that had grown, and now continue to manage my health with the help of endometriosis specialists, functional medicine doctors, therapists, and health coaches for support. I use a combination of medication, nutritional supplements, healthy diet, exercise, physical therapy, and meditation to make sure that my body is as healthy and balanced as possible.
My philosophy is simple: eat what makes you feel good, whatever that may be. Every person has different dietary needs, and we often find what works for us through trial and error. If you’re someone who is dealing with chronic fatigue, indigestion, autoimmune disease, or other health issues that may be holding you back, and you’re looking for some fun, clean recipes to add to your weekly menu, then Perriwinkle Kitchen is for you!
Showing up for your health can be difficult when you’re busy and overwhelmed. Between kicking ass at work or school, taking care of your family, paying the rent on time, keeping up with your Netflix binges, and maintaining a social life, you may not feel as though you have the time or energy to take care of yourself.
I get your busy lifestyle, and the fact that most days you just cannot juice seventeen green vegetables and prepare three well-rounded, gourmet vegan meals. Finding a balance that keeps you feeling good while still enjoying your food and your life can be difficult. I hope that the recipes on this site can help make your health journey a little easier, and a little more fun.
